LightForm, an importer and distributor of European lighting, has taken over a warehouse and gutted the place to make room for its many exquisite lines, including classic forms by Vibia and Nemo, and avant-garde numbers such as Moooi’s Horse, which has a lampshade on its head. This is great news, since the North York location is open only to the trade – meaning most of us could only shop its website.
Castor Design Studio is involved in the downtown renovation, with a mandate to retain the building’s industrial feel. Flos will have its own space within the showroom, a little jewel box designed to resemble its boutiques in New York and Paris. It’s all very nice, but the real draw is the 930-square-metre cash-and-carry stockroom, where shoppers can open boxes and handle the goods. Bring your renderings and plans – on-site designers are standing by.
SHOP HERE FOR: Modern international lighting, in styles ranging from architectural to whimsical, for indoors and out. The list of manufacturers is long – 40 or more – each of them innovative. Metalarte, for instance: The Bastone floor lamp ($3126) by Jaime Hayon turns on and off at the touch of a finger, while Hector Serrano’s Waterproof rechargeable floating pool lights ($486 each) resemble table lamps.
BEST BET: Crown Major by Nemo ($3230), a chandelier with simple lines whose arrangement of lights has been pared down to its basic molecular structure. Available in white, black and polished die-cast aluminum.
