Terroni Adelaide

This trendy trattoria has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1992 as a single four-seater panini shop. Now a four-location hipster empire, the newest, one-year-old locale (designed by Giannone Associates Architects) is housed in the former York County Court House. The building’s late 19th-century body has been infused with modern elements: a DJ booth is nested in the grand staircase while the washrooms and specialty wine cabinets are built into the basement’s jail cells. It’s noisy and busy most of the time, but the same great thin-crust pizza and pasta made daily that we’ve come to expect from Terroni’s are still here, along with one of the best wine bars east of Yonge. $$  Photography by Lorne Bridgman
