Yorkshire immigrant James Worts built a wind-powered gristmill here in 1832, partnered with William Gooderham, and within a decade transformed the enterprise into a thriving distillery that became the largest within the British empire. The site reopened in 2003 as a pedestrian-friendly complex filled with art galleries, design and clothing shops, coffee houses, restaurants and dozens of artist studios housed within the original warehouses and buildings. Most of the original buildings have been left intact, including giant boiler rooms, cavernous spaces and an 1860 stone warehouse, all connected by cobblestone walkways. The district has become a popular tourist destination and a desirable place to live with condo towers going up around the site but without trampling on the rustic charms of this vintage holdout. Stores in the district include Monte Clark Gallery, Corkin Gallery, Artcore/Fabrice Marcolini and Bergo Designs.
