Celia Franca Centre National Ballet School

Created by Goldsmith Borgal & Co. and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg, NBS’s new campus (completed in 2005) breathes new life onto Jarvis Street. Central to the redesign is a complex of glass-and-steel volumes, which surrounds and encases the Georgian-style house of longtime Toronto premier Sir Oliver Mowat (originally built in 1856). The fully glazed boxes, supported on recessed bases, house studios where ballet dancers in training can practice en pointe against the backdrop of the city; the three-storey atrium between the buildings serves as a gathering place for students. Two other historically relevant buildings, Havergal Ladies’ College and the Betty Oliphant Theatre, both on Jarvis, have also been preserved.
