Houndstooth Decor

Yet another reason uptown condo dwellers no longer have to venture south of Eglinton to furnish their pad or troll for decorating ideas: Houndstooth has brought the West Queen West aesthetic to the design district at Castlefield and Caledonia. A series of fully furnished vignettes showcase a mix of different styles – an irresistible mash-up of personality- rich retro, industrial grit and modern slickness that would take days of sourcing downtown boutiques to find. It’s the perfect mix of old and new: there are tailored Mad Men– esque sofas with “Made in Canada” stamped on their price tags, graffiti- inspired artwork on the walls, sharp dining sets and refurbished vintage desks. It’s a strategy that just might lure the downtown crowd north, where they can literally back a car right up to the door and make off with a whole room’s worth of inspired goods in no time.

SHOP HERE FOR: Furnishings for your entire house, from storage beds with tufted headboards (from $1395) to manly armchairs in distressed leather ($1395) and overstuffed sectionals (from $2995). Almost everything is customizable. Statement-making accents include mint-green shag rugs, huge framed maps of Rome, and the Coast Guard lamp – a tripod-mounted spotlight ($895).

BEST BET: It’s a toss-up between reclaimed-wood and poured-concrete coffee tables. Both styles have modern metal bases and a country- mouse-meets-city-slicker feel, which we like.
