Patrick Turner, Thomas Hirschmann and Andrea Pearson make up Thout, whose name was inspired by founder Turner's family cabin, which was wi-thout electricity and running water. This bit of family lore embodies the studio's sensibility for making do with less, or making more out of less. Take, for example, HoleyStump (a stool made from a cedar stump pierced with holes just big enough to hold a can of beer or a rolled-up magazine) or the ScribbleLamp and SpoolLamp (two hanging lampshades formed by a single black cord, one in strong frenzied loops, the other in orderly lines.)
