Finnish architect Viljo Revell won the worldwide competition to design Toronto’s new City Hall in 1958. His design included two curved towers, one 20 storeys tall and the other 27, encircling a saucer-shaped council chamber. The iconic sculptural form lends Toronto a futuristic sense of self that is dignified, yet wonderfully accessible via the plan’s popular gathering place, Nathan Phillips Square.
