The faculties of medicine, pharmacy, applied science and engineering have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the University of Toronto’s Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, designed by Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner and architectsAlliance. Called a “greenhouse for Nobel laureates,” the building’s opening in 2005 marked the next phase of international collaborative research on the Human Genome Project, which it was designed to house. The theme of transparency, drawn from the collaborative nature of the research, is also a key aspect of the building’s program. The corner of every other floor is double height and filled with plants, and the windows feature multicoloured frit glass in the same sequence as human DNA. The building’s position on the site – set back from the street with an expansive walkway leading up to the entrance – emphasizes these elements to great effect. A soaring atrium connects it to the adjoining Roseburgh and Medical Sciences buildings.
