Sandra Meigs: Beings

A new exhibit at Susan Hobbs Gallery explores themes of identity and transformation
This new exhibition at Susan Hobbs Gallery showcases artist Sandra Meigs’ latest series of evocative portraits, inspired by her residency in Banff. Blurring the line between human and nature, Beings explore identity and transformation through vivid, textured forms. The cold clung to the peaks, while the sun skimmed across frost-laced fungi dangling overhead. Beneath them, elk, driven by instinct, wove through hoof-worn trails in search of a simple love, exhaling clouds of warm longing into the crisp air.
Amid this landscape of bright white and evergreen, the Beings emerged—portraits, technically, but closer in spirit to gnarled trees. Step by thoughtful step, their vibrant forms filled the space, an electric dance of oil and water, resisting and yielding in equal measure. Over weeks, this exchange unfolded, each Being shaped by time, solitude, and a quiet yet resonant dialogue. Their painterly isolation defined them, yet their presence swelled, enveloping viewers in their slow, deliberate becoming.
With an undeniably twisted charm and eyes sharp with knowing, they each hold a story. If you ask, they’ll tell you about the first time they opened their eyes—when pale light carved spears through the trees, and snow-dusted elk wandered through a maze of quiet, endless wilderness.
