Our Editors’ Top Picks for This Winter’s One of a Kind Show

OOAK 2023 Winter Show
By Catherine MacIntosh and Joseph Cicerone in partnership with One of a Kind

With the holiday season in sight, so is the One of a Kind 2023 Winter Show! From November 23–December 3 at Enercare Centre, Exhibition Place, hundreds of makers and creatives will have their work on display. While we recommend taking your time to get to know all of the exhibitors, here are a few of the makers topping our must-see list.

OOAK 2023 Winter Show

Nicnackknits, Booth U-24

Out of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario come these cozy, chunky, hand-knit blankets, crafted using a finger-knitting technique. Made with love by Nicole at Nicnackknits, these blankets are soft to the touch and built to last. They are not only gorgeous to look at, but easy to care for – the chenille fibres can be tossed in the machine to wash. If you happen to be Christmas shopping, we think these would be a welcome surprise for many. The blankets’ natural weight gives them that huggable feeling that induces relaxation. Available in multiple sizes (for pets, babies and adults) and in an array of eye-pleasing colours, these blankets are a luxury that’s affordable to bestow on your friends, family or yourself!

Designer Candles

Milk Jar, Booth T-24

Founded by Holly Singer in 2016, Milk Jar began as a small venture born from Singer’s dream to create clean-burning, fragrant candles and give back to her community. Over the years, Milk Jar has not only grown as an artisanal business, but has also set an example of inclusive employment and supported non-profits. At this year’s show, we’ll be quick to pick up a candle from the Calgary-based brand’s holiday-themed Silver Smells Collection.

Toronto Gifts

The Paperhood, Booth A-44

Exhibitors since 2014, The Paperhood embodies civic pride and good taste. We love these detailed and stylized illustrations that depict our favourite local spots. Based in Toronto, the studio creates fun and lively scenes from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and around the world, available as greeting cards, art prints, cards, and more. Founder Malika Pannek has created a beautiful place where other artists now collaborate under the Paperhood banner, yet continue her vision of beautiful (and sustainably made) paper goods.

OOAK 2023 Winter Show

Clever Clippings, Booth J-44

You might recognize the collage art of local artist Selina Yung, whose handcrafted, analog pieces breathe new life into discarded images, offering a tactile and captivating adornment to any space. Yung launched Clever Clippings in 2021 and has since developed an instantly identifiable style, embedding elements of nostalgia into her pieces, which feature iconic motifs, movie characters and cityscapes. Beyond markets, including shop AGO and the Evergreen Brickworks flea, Clever Clippings can also be found at this year’s 2023 Winter Show with a wide range of pieces for sale, from stickers to apparel and, of course, art prints.

scopa

Scopa, Booth C-50

These aren’t your grandma’s beehives. With pollinator gardens popping up everywhere, why not have the chicest bee house in town? These modern and minimal, hand-crafted, solid-oak bee homes are approved by a wild bee specialist to be healthy and happy habitats for our two-toned friends. Unlike other hives, these house only a limited number of bees. The number of nesting blocks deters wasps and gives a safe space for non-aggressive bees to tend to their young. At One of a Kind’s 2023 Winter Show, see how Scopa bee houses utilize heirloom-quality materials and techniques, creating a stellar addition to your garden or outdoor space that will last a lifetime.

One of a Kind 2023, Winter

Small Hours, Booth Q-03

At Small Hours, leather goods get a fresh, refined look. From keychains to purses and pouches, this Toronto-based line of leather goods exudes luxury in a polite, satisfying way. Many are available for personalizing via embossing (in gold, silver, transparent glossy, white or black) or blind debossing (no colour) for a unique, modern piece that’s only yours. Owner and artisan Jenny has created a perfect palette of colours where you simply can’t go wrong. And, her prices are amazing for quality, hand-crafted leather goods.

The Plastery

The Plastery, Booth X-05

The nostalgic appeal of terrazzo continues in this year’s One of a Kind lineup. We especially love these modern pieces by Etsy shop The Plastery. In a rich colour palette, the timeless material is crafted into satisfying and tactile small home goods. Made in small batches, these handmade beauties add a unique look to your tabletop or dresser. Our personal favourites this year are the modern Christmas decorations and catch-all trays — gift giving made easy.

OOAK 2023

Doux Studio, Booth X-11

Caroline Alcide is a multidisciplinary artist based out of Toronto and the mind behind Doux Studio. Specializing in hand building and slip casting ceramics techniques, no two pieces of Alcide’s growing collection are ever the exact same, especially pieces that are entirely hand formed including the eye-catching mini Mushrooms and Tall Twist Vase. At this year’s One of a Kind show, find an assortment of truly unique pieces that serve both a visually decorative and functional purpose, from sea-inspired catchalls to glimmering ceramic mugs.

Rugs, Outdoor Door Mats

Deep Cover Rope Company, Booth T-25

Deep Cove Rope Company specializes in crafting what they call ultimate exterior rope doormats. Unlike the average mat that might wear quickly overtime, these handwoven pieces are made from UV-grade marine rope, ensuring durability even in harsh climates (yes, even Canadian winters). They effectively remove dirt, provide a comfortable surface, and are easy to maintain. Available in a variety of colours, each rug features a unique weave that makes them both useful accessories and a stylish addition to any entryway or outdoor space.

Kaber Kreations, Furniture design

Kaber Kreations, Booth K-29

Lovers of natural wood ought to acquaint themselves with the woodworking of Kayla Weber. The Hanover, Ontario designer behind Kaber Kreations crafts custom furniture from consoles to coffee tables, each with a focus on quality and material. Featuring natural hues of walnut, sometimes blended with bright resins or satin black epoxy, Kaber Kreations offers a timeless and heirloom-quality option for those seeking the understated statement piece to transform their interiors. Be sure to check out Weber’s eye-catching turquoise coffee table at OOAK’s 2023 Winter Show, which caught our eye for its vibrant pop of colour and modern silhouette.
