“Cute, fun and memorable.” Two of these words do not describe 2020, but all three certainly characterize Huey, a Toronto-born lighting brand in its infancy. And Cherub, shown here, is Huey’s aptly named first product. Because what better, dear home renovators, than a beautiful spirit-child – sans wings – to usher in a hopefully much lighter 2021?

The Designer & Her Mission

Product designer Bret Williams conjured Huey while renovating a dated warehouse condo a year and a half ago. “I quickly learned,” she says, “that the gap in the market for quality, accessible – yet elevated – lighting is present globally, and especially so in Canada. I wanted to support Canadian creators, but I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Specifically, stylish flush-mounts.”

A Lighting Shop is Born

Williams, with the help of three talented local fabricators, quickly set about helping other handy locavores top their own projects with a crowning jewel. Cherub does double duty as sconce and ceiling light and is made of porcelain at a local ceramic studio. Its cuddly baby rolls are available in six neutral hues that range from cloud white to charcoal, with a few earthy cyans thrown in for good measure. The CSA-approved lighting fixtures are hand-assembled here in the city with electrical parts imported from New York, and are simple for an electrician to install. Sound the trumpets: With Cherub, Toronto’s newest lighting brand has arrived with ease and levity, and is ready to tackle any home revamp.

Huey is $298, available in six colours, and for purchase at HUEYLIGHTSHOP.COM
