Reading Nooks

Our roundup of Designlines homes with cozy lounge areas for curling up with a good read

By Designlines

Whether you’re renovating your home, redecorating or just moved in, carving out some extra lounge space is never a bad idea. As we ride out the final stretch of winter, let these cozy reading nooks inspire some extra peace and quiet indoors.

The Cubby

At The Royal, Prince Edward County’s restored, Victorian-era hotel, a built-in reading nook is the perfect utilization of what would otherwise be negative space. For the colour fearful, it’s a great way to incorporate a touch of vibrancy without clashing neutral interiors.

Studio No. 33

The Open Concept

When Studio No. 33 renovated a historic home in The Annex to house a boutique psychology practice, functionality was key. Here, inbound shelving acts as an extra side table without creating a divide from the rest of the room. Sometimes, it’s as simple as how and where you place furniture that transforms a vacant corner into a functional reading nook.

Rocking chair view

The View

In Bennington House, designed by Post Architecture, a bedroom extension is the perfect place for a quiet read with a view. But this is no place for a simple desk chair, the homeowners instead opted for a bespoke wool-dressed rocking chair for this nook.

The Library

At the front of this mid-century bungalow, restored and renovated by LGA Architectural Partners, is a home library filled with mod furniture, art and, of course, books. If you’ve got the space for it, a designated reading area is an investment you surely won’t regret. The inspirational nook is lit by one of two new skylights, making this an ideal place to curl up with a good read.

The Study

“Bright and airy” might not be what comes to mind when you think of the perfect reading nook, but in this Creative Union renovation, a stuffy basement was reinterpreted as a lively work/play space, with a special corner carved out for reading.
