Carl Hansen & Son’s Shell Chair Turns 60

An exclusive version of the iconic design will be available for the remainder of 2023
Danish designer Hans J. Wegner is considered to be among the leading furniture designers of the 20th century. A driving force in the Danish Modern movement, his work – particularly in chair design – helped change the way people viewed furniture in the 1950s and ’60s. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created almost 500 during his five-decade-long career, many of which have achieved iconic status. Among those iconic designs: Carl Hansen & Son‘s CH07 Shell Chair.

To commemorate the Shell Chair’s 60th birthday, the Danish furniture company has released an exclusive anniversary edition available in a limited run until December 31, 2023. Made of rosewood and oak, the new release distinctly references the Danish Modern movement, where both exotic and homely woods were in vogue.

Characterized by a graphic design language and proven comfort, the Shell Chair’s wing-like seat gives it a floating lightness and demonstrates Wegner’s acclaimed knowledge of material and carpentry. To add stability to the three-legged design, Wegner developed a distinctive double frame that is equally beautiful from all angles and demonstrated in this modern retake.
Picturing this emblematic piece of furniture in a home office or minimalist living room is an effortless task, as it flawlessly epitomizes modern Danish design by blending form and function. Its distinctive and organic shape captures the essence of nature while embodying a sense of quintessentially mid-century modern elegance. Find it at local distributors of the brand, including Bulthaup Toronto, Design Within Reach, and Hollace Cluny.
