Designlines’ Top Interiors of 2022

Toronto boasts some incredible design, and in projects large or small, the charm and creativity of our local talent is evident. As we look forward to a new year, we look back at the top interiors that grabbed Designlines readers’ attention in 2022.

Forma Towers

Frank Gehry’s Forma Condos are poised to be the tipping point that brings Toronto’s skyline into world-class status. Benefitting the future iconic skyscrapers, interior designer Paolo Ferrari reimagines the concept of amenity spaces with a design centred on human experience.

An Old Warehouse Turned Modern Home

Architect Zuzanna Krykorka expertly melds original industrial warehouse vibes with a contemporary warm style. Here, architectural details like framed-glass room dividers contrast the home’s neutral palette without clashing.

A Merger of City and Sand

Optimizing natural light is an absolute art form — and our 2022 Designer of the Year has perfected it. Odami’s aptly named Beaches house takes cues from traditional beachfront typology to create a sun-kissed urban escape steps from Queen Street.

Aesop Yorkville

Speaking of our Designer of the Year, you might recognize this rich and luxurious Yorkville boutique from the cover of our most recent issue. Celebrated globally, the Odami-designed space makes for an unforgettable shopping experience.

Artful Deco

Architect Wanda Ely crafts a picture-perfect home with just the right touch of Art Deco glam. Upstairs, the bathroom is a beautiful spa-like sanctuary with fresh, minty green, oversized tiles extending to the ceiling. An enchanting skylight is the proverbial cherry on top.

The Wellington Condo

It couldn’t be a roundup of top interiors with out one green thumb. A prototype piloting interior designer Andrea Kantelberg’s new firm, Wellington Condo showcases the power of biophilic design in enhancing the body, mind and spirit.

Tile House

Distinct in its fiery red facade, this Midtown home by Kohn Shnier Architects packs a punch indoors, too. Striking architectural details, playful room dividers and a creative outlook on optimizing natural light make for a symphony of delightful design elements.

Ossington Avenue’s Formula Fig

If you’ve wandered down the Ossington strip recently, you may have noticed a wall of glossy, green tiles growing like ivy on one of the storefronts. Inside that chic facade, it becomes clear why this boutique skincare shop and spa are one of our top interiors of 2022. A sharp detail: the only contrast with Formula Fig’s enveloping green indoors is found in the bathroom, which is painted bright pink — a nod to the inside of the Fig itself.

Forest Hill House

Like much of the boutique design firm’s growing portfolio, Forest Hill House is a testament to Studio No. 33’s client-driven design approach. It made our list of top interiors with a design where outdoor and indoor live in tandem, chic and modern design elements streamline child-friendly details, and California Cool finds a home in Toronto.

The Calm, Cool and Collected Harty House

Atelier Sun, helmed by Andrew Sun, is known for its beautiful built-ins and maximizing the use of small spaces. In Ajax, the studio converted a cookie-cutter 1980s build into a unique and tranquil home embodying all of the studio’s signature elements.
